Usina do Gasometer - Porto Alegre

The Usina do, or simply Gasometer, is a former Brazilian plant power generation from Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul Despite the name, it was actually a coal-fired plant - such "Gasometer" referred to the area where the plant is now called the Round the Gasometer.
The building of the power plant Gasômetro opened in 1928 to house the Electric Power Company of Brazil, a subsidiary of Electric Bond & Share Co., a US-based company that managed the electricity and electrical transport in Porto Alegre until 1954.
The architectural complex is named due to its proximity to the old Hydrogen Plant Gas Carbonado occupying the margins Luíz Washington Street. This plant supplied gas for public lighting and supply stoves. The 117 meter chimney was built in 1937 during the administration of Alberto Bins to alleviate the problems caused by soot. The plant was shut down in 1970, coming from there, in the process of deterioration. It was thought to demolish it but there was society's reaction. Years later it reformed, overturned and transformed into a cultural center.
It is one of the most traditional to see the famous sunset, sun city, on the banks of the Guaiba Lake. Today Usina do is a major cultural center of Porto Alegre, being the scene of the most diverse art forms such as theater, dance, paintings, etc.
